Working Paper
Protest Surveying. Testing the Feasibility and Reliability of an Innovative Methodological Approach to Political Protest

The paper systematically explores and empirically tests the possibilities and limitations of a novel methodological approach to protest participation: surveying participants at specific protest events. Drawing on an extensive series of more than twenty protest survey datasets, comparing across issues and across nations, the paper contends that (1) protest surveying is a useful and complementary method, yielding information on protest participation that is only obtainable via this method; (2) protest surveying is a feasible and practicable way of gathering empirical evidence on protest participants; (3) protest surveying, when applied following strict procedures, can provide a representative and reliable image of the socio-demographics, attitudes, and behavior of protest participants.
